Pets For Toddlers

Having a pet around the home is a great way to teach your toddler how to be kind to animals and to start to learn about responsibility.  You'll need to decide if having a pet is right for your toddler and what kind of pet is best.

Is it a good idea to own a pet when you have toddlers?  While some experts admit that having to take care of toddlers is a full time job, adding a pet can pose a problem.  Let’s discuss if toddlers and pets is a good idea.

According to one expert, having a puppy in the home requires as much time as it does to train your toddlers.  In addition, while toddlers will play with dogs by either pulling their tail or biting their ears, they don’t realize they are hurting the dog and might be bitten in the process.  So too, depending upon the breed of the dog, they may not take kindly to being roughhoused by a toddler.

If you decide to have a dog, the best breed for toddlers is a Bijon Brise.  They are small, gentle, and love children.  However, this is not to say that toddlers should not be watched when playing with this breed.  Even the friendliest of dogs can be pushed too far.  Another great pet for toddlers is a beagle.  They are warm, loving dogs who love children.  They are also fantastic watch dogs as well.

When you have any kind of pet in your home, it is important to ensure they are kept clean and healthy.  This is paramount to the safety and health of your toddlers.  Regular vet visits are necessary and, in some cases, you may wish to utilize the services of a trainer if the dog you have obtained has a few quirks that could be detrimental to your toddlers.

Teach your toddlers how to handle their pets.  Show them where to pat the dog, and where not to.  For example, some breeds should not be touched when they are eating.  Have your child ask permission first so you can determine if the dog is open to a little hugging by your toddler.

If you have just obtained a pet, allow the pet to sniff your toddler but be sure to have the dog on a leash before doing so.  Let the dog get use to the toddler’s scent.

Another item you have to consider is if your child is allergic to certain type of pets.  Perhaps a dog may not be suitable, in which case you may choose a cat.  Experts tell us that cats are more toddler friendly than dogs, especially older cats.

Whichever pet you decide on, be sure you have researched the specific breed of dogs online to ascertain the best type of dog suitable for toddlers.  Seek information from your local vet you can give you insight into dog behavior especially around toddlers.

Toddlers and pets can occupy the same household in a loving and familial way.
